Wayne State University

Library and Information Science Program

Message from Director

Welcome to the Library and Information Science Program at Wayne State University! It is an exciting time to be in the information field and a particularly exciting time to study at Wayne State. Whether you are a first-time graduate student or wish to return for more advanced education, we have a program to suit your needs and career interests.

The LIS Program is focused on new initiatives that benefit our students. In the past year, the LIS Program has added new certificate programs, expanded course offerings in Macomb County and hired additional faculty and staff. These initiatives are designed to improve our students’ job marketability while making the Program accessible to more graduate students and mid-career information professionals.

The Library and Information Science Program is also working to maximize its partnerships with Detroit’s important cultural institutions – many of which are within walking distance of the Program’s home base in Kresge Library. The Program’s first cohort of 21st Century Digital Librarians graduated in August and we welcomed a new group of Fine and Performing Arts Librarians in September. The experimental courses developed for the digital librarianship cohort will soon be available to our entire student body.

After completing the LIS Program, many of our graduates find placement in library and information environments in Michigan, while other graduates join the ranks of LISP alumni in other states and countries. We are exceptionally proud of the role that the Library and Information Science Program plays in the profession. Many of our faculty and alumni are leaders in the profession, garner national awards, and contribute to the betterment of society through their research, teaching, and service.

At Wayne State University we are fortunate to be part of a large, dynamic research institution with proven leaders: Dr. Irvin D. Reid, President; Dr. Nancy S. Barrett, Provost; and Dr. Sandra G. Yee, Dean of University Libraries. We have an excellent full-time faculty of researchers and educators. We draw upon the leading information professionals in the region who teach part-time and supervise our student interns. In addition, we have a dedicated, professional staff that make student success their top priority.

I encourage you to explore this website fully and to check back often to see our constant updates. We welcome your support if you are an alumnus, your participation if you are a student and your questions if you are a prospective applicant. Feel free to contact me, either by phone, letter, or email should you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely,
